Dentofacial Orthopedics
Space it out!
You are probably familiar with orthodontics, but you may not have heard of dentofacial orthopedics. Orthodontics involves tooth movement, while dentofacial orthopedics deals with facial growth and development.
Dentofacial orthopedic treatments work best on children because the face is still developing until approximately age 17. These treatments often use orthopedic appliances to promote optimal facial bone growth. Common appliances used in dentofacial orthopedic treatments are Herbst appliances, maxillary expanders, and mandibular expanders. Crossbites, overbites, and under-bites generally can be corrected with dentofacial orthopedic treatments.
Misaligned teeth are easy to spot, while facial and jaw misalignments might go unnoticed. However, that does not mean they aren’t important to treat. Untreated facial and jaw misalignments can lead to headaches, pain in the jaw or face, worn down teeth, and TMJ disorders. You can visit our two location located in Massapequa and Garden City, NY.
Children should first see an orthodontist at age 7. The jaw and facial structure is still developing at this time, making it the optimal time to receive dentofacial orthopedic treatments. Dentofacial orthopedic treatment is possible for adults but oftentimes requires surgical intervention.
